Over the past couple of years, we have had the privilege of working with one of Manchester’s most iconic and prestigious restaurants on the provision of audio-visual services for corporate events and private parties; including some memorable occasions with owner Rio Ferdinand’s Manchester United day job team-mates following cup wins!

During that time, our strong relationship with the management team led to us being asked to refurbish their existing PA system to bring it up to the high standards of the space – a task which has seen continual improvement and tweaking to keep up with the changes in decor and evolving requirements of the multi-purpose venue.

This included ample processing and zoning control to allow the volume in each area of the restaurant to be controlled and tuned to suit the audience and source material. A BSS SoundWeb London BLU-160 configurable I/O processor was chosen to allow for maximum flexibility and future-proofing, and was installed alongside a custom built BLU-10 touchscreen wall panel allowing for selection of source material, output volume and EQ tuning independently in each of the four designated zones – this allows the management to push more bass when the DJ is on, or reduce the midrange in background music to allow their guests to converse more easily, all without requiring complex knowledge of audio systems.

We also replaced the previous amplifier platform with a modern, more powerful Void Acoustics design allowing increased headroom, as well as repositioning and re-hanging the existing bracketry to improve coverage and avoid spill from each speaker cluster to the next.

However, despite our efforts the core elements of the system - the speakers - simply did not perform to the high specifications expected by both the restaurant ownership and clientele. Therefore, our primary brief was to ensure that the replacement was of the highest calibre, and our recent partnership with the pioneering Danley Sound Labs from Georgia, USA allowed us to specify a system that is truly second to none.

Danley's patented, full-range Synergy Horn and Tapped Horn subwoofer designs put multiple speaker cones into a single cabinet in a revolutionary way that provides incredibly consistent, even coverage of audiophile-level audio with uncompromising output levels, allowing the use of fewer cabinets and less mains electricity to cover a given area. This allowed us to reduce the number of speakers used in the venue from 20x mid-high speakers, and 4x dual 10" subwoofers, to just 8x full-range main cabinets and 1x dual 12" subwoofer - with better sound quality, and an increased maximum volume level at every seat!

All visible cabinets were finished in custom alabaster white with white bracketry, so that they match the finish of the walls perfectly. The single TH212 subwoofer is hidden inside a custom built cabinet near the fireplace, fronted with a brass grille that again matches other fixtures in the venue.

In addition, brand new Audac ceiling speakers were added to basement bathroom and corridor areas, and we also provided a bespoke DJ console for the Pioneer Nexus series equipment provided by ourselves in rich, dark oak veneer matching the newly refurbished bar was provided for the weekend evening's music entertainment.

To facilitate the increasing number of live bands and solo vocalists performing in the restaurant on select evenings, an Allen & Heath MixWizard WZ4 16:2 16 channel analogue mixing desk with effects unit is also hidden underneath the DJ console, alongside the venue's CBurn streaming playlist computer system that provides tailored background music playlists to suit any mood.

All existing cabling was also tested, and new runs made where necessary to provide a clearer, shorter wire path between amplifier and speaker. Cable was colour matched to the walls it was running alongside, as were the cable fixtures and fittings to continue the ‘out of sight, out of mind’ feel.

The end result is a venue that has more a more even, consistent and louder sound response, with more control and flexibility placed into the hands of it’s owners, which leads to happier staff and guests!
