One of Neuron’s longstanding clients was employed as in-house promoter at the iconic venue known as Joshua Brooks, and as a regular user of our Air Motion v2 rental systems he saw an opportunity to really improve the sound in the venue, which needed a little refurbishment to help regain it’s past glory days as Manchester’s premier underground venue. We held a demo day in the space, removing the existing system temporarily, and the management remarked on how improved the sound was from the existing system of two 100-degree horns per side – which simply directed far too much high frequency energy away from the dance floor and into the very reflective walls and ceilings. The subs were also not efficient enough nor dropped low enough to meet the ever increasing bass demands of modern music. Whilst the PA had served the venue well for many years, performers and promoters had started to ask to rent in one of Neuron’s systems instead, so it made sense to look into making it a permanent fixture.
The main PA installation consists of a flown Air Motion v2 and a Stasys X v2 cabinet per side covering the dancefloor, with the pre-existing custom built out-fills in the bar and staircase areas receiving a retuning and new crossover settings to bring them in line with the new components. The monitors were also upgraded with a more capable low-frequency woofer to meet the demands of the DJs for more volume without blowing drivers, and the back end was replaced with processing and amplification by Void too, using a Digidrive v2 feeding into an Infinite amplifier rack offering just shy of 10,000w of main PA power at the speakers’ nominal impedance. Plenty for a dance floor barely over 5 metres square!
Since opening in 1994, Joshua Brooks has broken legends such as the Chemical Brothers and more before they started playing larger venues and festivals. It’s also got a fantastic selection of specialist beers and ciders, which is very rare for a dance music venue. All of this coupled with the new PA ended up with the venue being shortlisted for ‘Best Small Venue 2014’ in DJ Mag, alongside long-established London venues such as Corsica Studios.
Following a change of ownership and complete venue refurb in 2016, we were asked to remove the existing installation and replace it with high-end ceiling speakers with a modern zone control system, and high definition projection system for sports events. We also took time to fine tune the basement installation further, and added new DSP amplification to further improve the DJ monitoring experience.
In 2017, the venue rebranded itself as Versions, bringing in a new in-house promotions team with a focus on recapturing the halcyon days of the clubs past. The space was opened up completely, increasing capacity, and as such a secondary Void Acoustics Air Ten soundsystem with additional sub was installed and carefully time aligned to the existing, but repositioned Air Motion PA. The booth was also rebuilt into a new custom structure adorned by concrete, eliminating any potential vinyl feedback in such a small space.
